My father will be celebrating his 60th birthday in a couple of months time. He's not really looking forward to it, in fact, I would have to say he is somewhat depressed about it all. My dad has kept his age health and handsome good looks very well until the past few years. Suddenly, he has turned a dapper grey and needs to wear his reading glasses more than he used to. I've never thought of my parents as getting until I started to think about his sixtieth birthday. It is a milestone for him and I know that he deserves something very special. I have started to plan a surprise party for him. and set about buying some special 60th birthday presents. While looking for themes and decorating ideas, I was dismayed to discover that most of the party supplies out there are geared towards focusing on being over the hill. I don't want to do that to him. I mean, if someone is dreading turning a certain age, why rub their faces in it or focus on the fact. Make it enjoyable.

We decided to go with a light dinner theme since we do have a limited budget. We actually reserved a room at The Riverside Pub and they will be catering the party as well. Their prices are incredibly reasonable and their food is always delightful. I somehow want people to skip the insulting 60th birthday presents, but I'm not sure how to get the word out about that. I guess I'll just take my chances and hope that guests are more considerate. I suspect some of his old workmates will take the mickey out of him with some awful 60th birthday presents.

I decided that I didn't just want a regular birthday cake. I wanted something a bit more special. I called up the same baker that had done an excellent job on my wedding cake and asked her what she could do. She recommended a cake decorated as a package with a huge fondant bow on top of it. She would put the number 60 all over the cake as well. It cost more than what I had planned for, but his 60th birthday only comes once in a lifetime. Plus, he's worth it. I want this to be a party that he will never forget. I'll treat the cake as one of his 60th birthday presents.

My best friend is involved in making her own greetings cards, and she graciously offered to make 60th birthday invitations for the party. The design that she created is adorable. I'm trying to put tons of unique touches on this party. Why does a 60th birthday party have to be the same as every other traditional party? It doesn't. Neither does any birthday party. Take some time to personalize it and do things differently. The birthday boy or girl will appreciate it more than you'll know.
